Oman - Beautiful Sites

Friday with Carey and Chad and the kids started with a road trip to Wadi Shaab - It is an enormous canyon type landscape through the mountains about 2 hours from Muscat on the ocean. The deep opening in the mountains occured from water cutting it's way through over millions of years. The walls of the wadi are 5000 feet up in some areas. It's breath-taking views are beyond the imagination. The water leads out to the ocean.

The walk/hike turned into some rock climbing and scrambling after a while; the aftermath of the cyclone that hit 2 years ago attacking Oman with torrential rains, destroying some of the walkways, moving huge, enormous amounts of boulders and realigning the river made for finding your own trail once in a while. This area lost hundreds of date palm trees in the cyclone.

After an hour hike into the wadi, you come upon pools to swim in, relax beside. The rock wall formations are amazing all the way through. When we arrived to the desired spot, a drop down a wall and another jump into a pool brought you to a formation in the wall with a opening the size of your head to go through a "keyhole" opening- beyond that was an amazing cave - I, Carol, however, did not go to this part and will leave it up to Dick to describe... more on that later.
As you all know photos do not due justice to places like this ..

Modernization has hit areas like this also - the views are starting to change with the building of new highways

A stroll through the date palms... Oman is the largest exporter of dates in the world...

  1. This looks like a very neat place. The water and cliffs look awesome. Dates are a very good snack and we like them alot in this house. Thanks for sharing. Ben in Montana.
