Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Minutes from Carey and Chad's house is the Mosque of the ruler of Oman, Sultan Qaboos. It is an enormous, breathtaking site. The marble, landscaping, intricate designs, carpets are of the highest quality. The carpet in the men's prayer hall is the second largest carpet in the world. The chandelier hanging in the center is the second largest one in the world as well - the largest ones being in Iran.

This area of the mosque is large enough to fit 20,000 worshippers at one time.

Women must cover their heads to enter, as well as to their ankles and wrists. Men must wear long pants. Shoes must be removed to enter the main prayer hall.

There were several workers at the time we were there - some of them up on two story scaffolding just to wash the bird droppings off the marble walls and columns. Others were gardening - using palm fronds to sweep the walkways.
